BELLINGHAM, WA - February 16, 2005 - Looking at the stars in many of
the world's largest cities is a very rare event... until now. If you
have the money, you can view a totally accurate fiber optic and
acrylic sculpture of the night sky, only better, in your own home or
penthouse.
Jim Vann of Legend Designs LLC is the "light-sculptor" who uses
acrylic sheets, fiber optic cables, LED lights, and thirty-eight
different techniques in his patented designs that are above and beyond
the elementary star ceilings found in most custom homes, super yachts,
and motor coaches.
What really sets Vann's star sculptures apart from the rest of the
field is that the stars are just the beginning of his sculpture. He
found that looking at a ceiling with tens of thousands of stars can be
very intimidating to most people, unless you're an astronomer. To get
around this problem and make it more fun and interactive, using voice
control or remote, you can tell the star sculpture you want
"connecting lines" and red lines or dots connect all the major stars
in the constellations in their familiar patterns. You may go even
farther by requesting "constellation outlines" and the outline of the
constellation symbol will appear around the stars, ("Leo" will have a
lion outline and "Ursa Major" a bear). Of course the "Milky Way" is
included and hundreds of small galaxies and nebula (all smaller than a
dime, with accurate color and dimensions) that can also be
illuminated. One installation had a "Milky Way" with over fifty
thousand points of light that shimmered to the sound of a voice.
"Shooting stars" and comets can also be added to the star sculpture
and Vann even legally registers a star named after each client and
includes it in the sky, in it's correct location, free of charge.
Instead of random points of light with off-the-shelf illuminators,
Vann's stars are all accurate in size, color, and magnitude. His
stars use custom made illuminators that cause the stars to seem alive
as they mimic atmospheric twinkling with eighty percent white light,
ten percent red light, and ten percent blue light using LED,s with no
moving parts, with nothing ever to break or replace. The average star
sculpture, including frame and options, will incorporate hundreds of
miles of different size fiber optic cables.
If that is not enough, with the light organ option you can turn off
all the stars and then say; "light organ" and the dark ceiling will
come alive with 30-100 thousand individual fiber optic cables each
exactly 2cm apart with up to sixteen million colors that change with
pre-programmed patterns to voice or music. "It's the best way to
listen to music, especially in home theaters where people usually have
the best acoustics and sound system", says Vann.
Because of the level of detail and the amount of options available,
the average sculpture, which range in size from 3 to 30 feet in
diameter, can take a year or more to complete and have required as
much as 17,000 man hours in the past. After the owner specifies what
they want, then Vann and his crew handle every aspect of the design,
construction, and installation. Van adds, "I have worked with the
best lighting designers, home theater designers, acoustical engineers,
architects, and engineers in the world and have learned a great deal
from them, so I have to be a team player and try to make sure everyone
stays happy without compromising my art or the owner's vision".
